Auburn Tigers Football A-Day Game Photos for 2009

This past Saturday we went to the annual A-Day game here in Auburn.  For those unfamiliar with what we (and Bama folks) call an A-Day game, it is when between 40,000-90,000 people come to their respective stadium to see their team play each other.  More like a glorified open Spring practice, but one because it is Auburn or Alabama football is made into an event.

We here in Auburn had about 45,000 people show up (Alabama who had their game televised on ESPN had about 90,000) this year.  It was good to see the new offense throw down the field and although you really needed a PhD to understand the scoring it was fun to watch.  Here are some photos from the day including one of Deb’s sunglasses (I also love the shot of the security guards in the upper deck, what a job).

Crazy Weather with 70 Degrees and Snow in Auburn

Tree in Back Yard

Pork Loin Roast

This has has been a crazy Saturday weather wise.  Started off with tornado and thunderstorm warnings all over the place and turned into a nice sunny and rather warm day at 70*, but tonight, there is snow expected.  I think we are well below the actual snow line if there is one but non-the-less, we are expecting a light dusting tonight.

We did have a nice evening with some friends from church tonight.  We shared a meal (see Pork Loin on the grill below) and enjoyed just a few minutes of not having to be somewhere or do something other than just hang out for a while.  It was nice, just wish it lasted a little longer. The buzz around the Internet right now seems to be how can we get out of going to church tomorrow because it is going to snow type thing, but apparently the doors of the church will be open come rain or snow, imagine that.  I am sure people up north who live in snow all winter are laughing. I guess my thought on that would be if you need an excuse not to come to church for a Sunday then just stay home and relax and watch the snow.

A Strange Saint Valentine’s Day Today

Valentine's Day Socks

Does this seem like a really strange Valentine’s day to you? For some reason it being on Saturday seems like it got overshadowed today by Saturday being Saturday.  This is not to say that Deb and I do a whole lot to celebrate Valentine’s Day on a normal year, but this year I spent most of the day today at a leadership retreat for our church (post coming soon), and then we were able to catch up with each other for the Auburn vs Mississippi State basketball game (also post coming soon).

Holiday days of any kind are not my favorite.  They disrupt the flow of everything (which is not actually bad), but more importantly, Deb and I make a conscience effort to do these things all year round, not just on some special day because that is what the calendar says to do.  Instead of spending the day together on Valentine’s Day, we spend every day we can together, including every attempt to spend each Friday together all day without interruption.  That doesn’t always happen, but instead of a date night, we have a date day.  In that respect, we should act like it is Valentine’s Day every day, right.

Valentine’s Day [also here] contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

Deborah has her own way to celebrate each holiday that rolls around, she has a pair of socks that she wears on one day of each year.  Today, those are the Snoopy Valentine’s Day socks (seen below).  I have mine, a few photos to celebrate the day, Valentine’s Day chocolate of course.  So to Deb’s socks and everyone else, happy Valentine’s Day.

Auburn Basketball Team Beats Tennessee at the Buzzer 78-77

Auburn vs Tennessee 2009

I love walking around in the heart of Auburn sports on campus.  For the basketball game today we parked in the Jordan Hare Stadium parking lot, as many do, and I shot this photo as we walked by the stadium.  Directly across the parking lot is the new $92.5 million Auburn Basketball Arena being built while the older Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum which opened in 1969 sits to the left and directly across from the baseball field, Plainsman Park.  A lot of history and tradition in one small place, and a lot new history being made.

Auburn played a great game today and finally came out on top right at the last few seconds of the game.  It really could have gone either way at the end and the Vols did get off a last second shot at the buzzer and it just didn’t drop.  The season is getting very close to March where it will wind down and give way to the crack of Baseball, and this team has managed to win games they shouldn’t and loose games they should win.

Basketball this year has been as enjoyable as always but I am really looking forward to the opening of the new arena when we can pack the house for a basketball game and at least look like we have some support for our basketball team.  There was a lot going on in Auburn this Saturday and I am glad I was able to spend some time with Deb and my parents as well.

Busy Week Ends with Smokey Bones BBQ :: Friday Feet

Dinner at Smokey Bones

This was one of the busier weeks I can remember in a while.  Trying to transition everything from different positions and personnel in conjunction with a fast and furious start to the new year made for a crazy week (see Brian’s post It’s only Wednesday // How to drain yourself in three days for a good explanation).  Deb and I drove out to Columbus GA for something a little different than the Auburn flavor and had dinner at Smokey Bones, a BBQ place we like out that way.  This week it is my friday feet post (although this one is less feet and more Deb).

On Saturday we will be going to the Auburn vs Alabama basketball game.  After our last attempt against the Florida Gators it doesn’t look like this game is going to be much better, but who knows.  I am going to try to take my camera and get a few slamin’ shots.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Going Low Tech with Lopi to Heat the House

Hunting for Wood

Splitting Wood

Split Wood

lopi-wood-burning-stove

Most things in our house are high tech as we can get, except when it comes to heating the house.  When we built this house a few years ago we put in a wood burning stove (see Lopi, Lopi, and Lopi).  Heating our home with a wood burning stove is great, except… you have to have wood of course.  Since Deb likes the house to be WARM, we certainly save quite a bit on electricity over the winter (bill runs around $65 in the winter), it just takes a lot of labor to get it to the point of burning as you see below.

So, we spend many a Saturday afternoon in what turns out to be pretty tough work of cutting up wood, splitting, and stacking.  Theoretically we should be working on seasoning our wood about a year out from when we are burning it, but so far we haven’t been able to catch up with the seasons and come summer time we really don’t want to be out there doing this type of work, so, we are doing it now.

This isn’t much of a technological post, other than the fact that I do have my phone out there with me, but this is what we did today.  You will have to excuse the quality of the photos, all the images below were taken with my phone.

We have this sort of disaster area in the adjacent property our here.  Early this year the logging trucks came in and clear cut the 40+ acres and left a huge mess of wood scrap bio-mass (mostly hard wood trees they didn’t want), and in the process gave us an almost endless supply of wood for our stove.  Luckily we can’t see the mess next door from our house, and the owner of the property (which use to be a nice deer lease) was thrilled was wanted to clean it up a bit.

It was a totally exhausting day, but the end result is heat for the house.

A Busy Weekend Cleaning and the New iPhone?

Cleaning on First Saturday

Control Booth on Sunday Morning

Not having done my daily journal post in a while I thought I would sum up the weekend here real quick. It was a very busy weekend starting with a shoot on Saturday and then another most of the day on Sunday.

First Saturday Photo Shoot

Saturday I was shooting a clean up and maintenance session called First Saturday. I wasn’t quite sure going in if I would get anything worth keeping photographically, but it didn’t turn out to bad. Sometimes when you are trying to shoot somewhat ordinary tasks it makes you really look for ways, or new ways, to be creative.

I went ahead and completed the edit of the shoot when I got home, knowing there would be another shoot on Sunday, glad I did too. You can see the complete gallery edit of First Saturday here, if you are so inclined. There were still the normal things like grass to mow and all that so Deb and I tried to squeeze everything in we could that day.

Sunday Photo Shoot and Service

Sunday was a packed day, starting around 5am and ending at close to midnight. It would be the first time to go in and shoot during the service and try to be as invisible as possible while shooting communion. It was a busy day (see Sunday over at Worship Journey for details). Of course, the booth is a busy place to be on a Sunday morning.

I was hoping to get the edit done for that shoot on Sunday as well but just couldn’t get to it, and I was exhausted, so I will just do it today or tomorrow. As soon as I get the completed galleries loaded I will post links to them here as well.

This Week, Photos, and a little WWDC / iPhone

So, this week is just about as busy as last week. We start off on the Internet with the WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference) where Steve Jobs is set to announce the latest version of the iPhone. Supposedly in new colors, and deemed to be the 3G version for its capability of utilizing the AT&T broadband 3G network.

If so, it is about time. The edge network is slow, and anyone familiar with cell phone usage in Europe or Japan would be appalled by the lack of cell phone broadband available. It is interesting to see how things develop. If you are familiar with Twitter, they are now showing a link using Summize: Apple fan? Our pals at Summize are tracking the WWDC shown on their main page. It automatically feeds on any terms on Twitter using Steve Jobs, Apple, iPhone, or WWDC, pretty interesting, but traffic is huge, will probably take down Twitter before long.

I would like to have some time to try to figure out how to really utilize Summize, especially with its advanced search features. Guess I will leave that for another day, but its potential looks great. The search strings are endless if you are interested in a very specific topic. As far as the new iPhone goes, ff course I already have the first generation iPhone so I hope they just add the 3G service for existing customers as well, don’t think I will be running out for iPhone 2.0 any time soon unless they need some free beta testers.

Bought a Morgan Out Island 33 Sailboat Called LAUGHALOT

Laughalot

There is a lot in a name. We found this boat about three weeks ago and it was exactly the make, model and condition we were looking for. The only problem was we had to wait two weeks to get free to go down to Florida to see her. Luckily, we put a contract on her right away, subject to inspection, so we would be the first in line to buy her, if we liked her.

I am so glad we acted when we did. There were at least three other VERY serious buyers that we were able to beat to the deal. One of those buyers showed up at the boat last Saturday night to try and get a look at her and we had to inform him that she had been sold *TO US*! I couldn’t believe how sad he looked. This will be our third sailboat together and hopefully we will have a little bit more luck with this one than the last two.

Anyway, Laughalot is ours now and we have already started the process of bringing her into the 21st century. There is so much to do to her. She is in great condition to sail right now, but we want to update the electronics, work on the engine, electrical systems, rigging, and plumbing. Updates on her restoration progress will be posted here.

She did come with loads of extras that we weren’t even expecting. She has a gimbaled stove/oven, hot water heater, refrigerator, brand new stereo system, wind generator, water maker, dinghy, life raft, epirb, bimini with dodger, and even an air conditioning/heating unit that works perfectly. Unbelievable!!! We were truly “laughing a lot” at our good fortune when we made the deal and she was all ours. Enjoy the photos.

Beautiful!

The marina where she is located is at the end of a long channel that leads out to the Gulf of Mexico. There used to be a restaurant in the big building you see in the photos, but it burned on the inside and never reopened. As you can see from the photos we are in the last slip on the dock and it is so private and peaceful there. When you are looking at the building from the channel Laughalot is to the right, tucked back in the corner.

Our first weekend we spent on Laughalot was last weekend and we were surprised and excited to see all kinds of birds. We saw white herons, gray storks (or herons, not sure about that one), pelicans, seagulls, and one bird of prey who apparently is a local.
