Callaway Gardens Butterflies and Stained Glass :: Friday Feet

Today for Friday Feet Deb and I took the short drive over to Callaway Gardens.  The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center is a great place to spend a few unique hours with the butterflies.  I have been to the Butterfly Center 3 or 4 times before, but not for about 10 years or so.  I had not been since I switched over to digital shooting so today I finally got some of what I have on film from years ago.

The Cecil B Day Butterfly Center has 1,000 tropical butterflies, representing more than 50 different species, flutter freely through the air. Tropical plants and birds, reside peacefully with the colorful winged jewels in North America’s largest, glass-enclosed tropical conservatory.

It is a different kind of setup to get some good shots over there and a flash is almost a must so thanks very much to Jak Blount for letting me borrow his Nikon SB-800 (I’ll return it with a nice new diffuser for you).  There is a lot more over at Callaway than the butterfly center of course and if you like to ride bikes, they have a great 10 mile paved trail through the park.

Once we were finished over at the butterfly house we got on our bikes and peddled through the rest of the park, something I haven’t done in all my other visits.  To my surprise, there is a lot more to see over there than butterflies.  About half through the trail we came upon a beautiful Chapel that the Callaway’s had built back in the mid 1960′s.  The stain glass was original and is still maintained by the company that installed it over 40 years ago.  Just an incredible display, and a 1,300 piece pipe organ to go with it.  I bet the acoustics are great when that organ gets going.

We finished up the bike trail stopping at various attractions that Callaway Gardens has to offer and ended with an early dinner in Columbus.  As I sit here writing it is pouring down rain and the temps have dropped at least 20 degrees from this afternoon.  We managed to spend the day in 70* sunshine.  If you have a chance to get to Callaway (especially during the Spring bloom) it is well worth the trip.

I will upload all of the photo from the shoot to my flickr account in the Callaway Gardens gallery some time tonight, the stain glass close up shots are pretty cool.  Have a great weekend everyone.

Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium Photos :: Friday Feet

Georgia Aquarium

Today for my Friday Feet post we made the drive over to Atlanta and finally went to see the Georgia Aquarium.  It has been on the bucket list for a while and it was nice to get out of Auburn for a short period of time today.  It is easy to forget what kind of traffic issues we have here in Auburn (none unless a football game is going on) until you drive into downtown Atlanta.

Deb and I did make our way over to the CNN Center for lunch and walked around Centennial Park in Atlanta before making our way over to the Georgia Aquarium.  The Georgia Aquarium is a collection of several different displays totaling an 8 million gallon display of fish from all over the world.  It is the largest aquarium in the country (so I have been told) and well worth the trip if you are going to be in the Atlanta area.

I did think it would take a little longer to go through than it did.  All in all it was about 2 hours to walk through all the displays, and the jellyfish display was really the most impressive tank out of all the aquariums in the building.  It was a bit pricy to me at $27 a ticket and I wanted to see the new exhibit with the Titanic artifacts but for an additional $7 we opted out.  I actually would have paid the extra $7 to see the museum on the Titanic, but the kicker was I had to leave my bag outside and couldn’t take any photos in the museum.  Since I had all my camera equipment with me and was there to take photos, we decided to leave it for another day.  What I found really great is the Georgia Aquarium is actually on Twitter (as @GeorgiaAquarium), way to go.

It was nice to spend my day off with Deb, a long overdue few hours of time together today, and we managed to do something new for Friday Feet.  It does take some effort to get out of the house and do something.  One wouldn’t think so, but it is far easier to just sit and soak or just do more of the same thing each week, but why do what is easiest… but… coming up with new ideas is not always easy, so I may do what Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs has done and take suggestions from my readers.  Any suggestions for a Friday Feet post you would like to see?  Just let me know in the comments below.

Hope you enjoy the photos of the day.  You can see the full shoot I uploaded on the Georgia Aquarium and Atlanta on my flickr page gallery here.  Have a great weekend everyone.

Cold Day of Code and Godin’s Tribes :: Friday Feet

Scott Reading Tribes

Scott Reading Tribes

Today was supposed to be a day off but it was so cold outside today that I ended up just looking at code all day long (which was better than going outside).  So I took my friday feet photo today of what I had planned on doing today, sitting back and reading a book.  That didn’t happen but I was able to get moving on a few blogs and website development projects (the shoes in the pic are just for effect since each week I am wearing the same shoes).

I am in the middle of reading two books right now, Tribes and Unleashing The Idea Virus, both written by Seth Godin (his blog).  Some how I ended up reading both of these books at the same time.  Unleashing The Idea Virus was written first and Tribes is making more sense after reading some of Idea Virus.  I will be posting a review of one or both once I get through reading them, but so far they are both excellent.

I am about to finish my first two full months at the church and now I am really starting to get into the grit of my position.  Once the new website is launched over the next week or two it will really be a start to what I hope is going to be a strong Internet presence in the months and years to come for the church.  I am really excited about how it is starting to come together, and today I spent a good bit of time getting to know the code a little better.

After looking at coding for about 12 hours Deb and I went out to eat at a (very) local restraunt called Good ‘Ol Boys.  Tomorrow the Auburn Basketball team takes on Vandy in the next SEC matchup for the Tigers.  Doesn’t look like it is going to be any warmer, some are actually calling for snow on Monday night, yikes.

Bike Ride Through Chewacla State Park :: Friday Feet

This was an extremely busy week again but today is finally Friday and time for Friday Feet.  Today we drove out to Chewacla State Park to ride our bikes on the trails (paved that is).  Is you live near Auburn this is a great gem right out of town, has a nice river, waterfall, and fishing lake.  Along with a very nice route around the river, there is a bike trail just at the entrance of the park which is a popular running and biking spot.  It was nice to get some exercise outside now that we are deep into winter, but it ended up being about 70* today and made for a nice bike ride.

We stopped at the lake to sit on the swing, which made for my Friday feet post today.  I was able to work a little panning technique into the shoot today with Deb on the swing.  I love the effect of motion but it isn’t all that easy to pull off and make it look half way decent.  You can do this in a number of different situations, I just forget to give it a try sometimes.

No body else has jumped on the Friday Feet bandwagon yet, but I have found that it has forced me to look at different ways to do this weekly (short) shoot.  It isn’t that each Friday has to be something spectacular, it just keeps me thinking about how to keep creating original ideas.  It helps to have a nice mild day in winter.

Busy Week Ends with Smokey Bones BBQ :: Friday Feet

Dinner at Smokey Bones

This was one of the busier weeks I can remember in a while.  Trying to transition everything from different positions and personnel in conjunction with a fast and furious start to the new year made for a crazy week (see Brian’s post It’s only Wednesday // How to drain yourself in three days for a good explanation).  Deb and I drove out to Columbus GA for something a little different than the Auburn flavor and had dinner at Smokey Bones, a BBQ place we like out that way.  This week it is my friday feet post (although this one is less feet and more Deb).

On Saturday we will be going to the Auburn vs Alabama basketball game.  After our last attempt against the Florida Gators it doesn’t look like this game is going to be much better, but who knows.  I am going to try to take my camera and get a few slamin’ shots.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Today was our first and last full day on the gulf coast.  For January, the weather was beautiful but very very windy.  We went to one of our most favorite places in the Perdido Key area, the Gulf Islands National Seashore. We never really stay for more than a day or two down here but you pay for a 7-day pass ($8) and have access to one of the most wonderful white sand beaches on the Alabama/Florida gulf coast shore lines.

Every time we have been here the 5-7 mile stretch of beach has only a handful of people (today almost no one) and it seems to be one of those few areas in the country that still has pristine beaches and little sign of city life.  Our other favorite area like this is over on the Outter Banks of North Carolina which also has some of the most untouched beaches in the country. So for my Friday Feet post today, here is my feet image, and also a few more.  Tomorrow is it back to Auburn and back to work.

Alabama vs Utah Football on Tap Today :: Friday Feet

Bike Ride

This has been a busy week and a busy Friday.  We started off the day with some tree trimming work on the farm.  Always good exercise and never a lack of work to be done.  The temperature has been going crazy lately.  Yesterday it was freezing and today it was about 60* so I managed to get in about a 10 mile bike ride before the bowl games started.

The bowl game of the day of course is Alabama vs Utah in the 2009 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.  It has been a very long time since Auburn has not made it to a bowl game, so this year I am just going to have to go for Alabama.  Hopefully next year we will be back in a bowl game somewhere warm.

Friday Feet today was a triple shot of trees, bike, and football (although the football game was Kentucky vs Easy Carolina, which was also a very good game).  As I write this the Alabama game is now and Utah has taken a touchdown lead, it should be a great game.  This year it seems like it has been a very long holiday and I am looking forward to getting back to a normal work week and to next weekend when Deb and I will take a short break down in Orange Beach.  Have a great weekend everyone.

Beautiful December Day with Valkyrie Movie :: Friday Feet

Tree in Winter

feet in concrete

This was probably once of the nicest late December days that I can remember.  It was over 70* with partly cloudy, blue sky and I ended up working outside all day.  We ended up taking down our Christmas lights today and replacing them with our “everyday lights” which will remain up the rest of the year (these are lights that go around the inside of our patio).  We started decorating the patio for this coming summer, which actually was an idea in part from a friend Cindy Wall during her baptism (photos will be coming on down the road).

As the holiday days wind down I am really looking forward to getting back to work (without holiday interruptions).  We have so much coming up in the next few months, and I am really looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.  One area we will be ramping up is “Twitter church”.  So if you are not a Twitter member yet, sign up and see what it’s all about.  Once you have signed up, you can follow Cornerstone from @cornerstonebuzz and if you are so inclined, you can follow me at @scottfillmer as well.

My Friday Feet post is a little late because I spent most of yesterday with family and at the movies.  My dad and I went to see Valkyrie and if you have any desire to see the story about the assassination attempt on Hitler, I would highly recommend this movie.  I knew very little about this story from WWII and although it was a movie, it did seem to follow the historical account fairly close.  Although I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise any more, it is hard to deny that this was one of the better movies of 2008.

My friday feet post today is in recognition of the last Friday of the 2008 calendar year.  This photo is on the corner of our patio.  Deb and I placed our feet in the wet concrete just about this time two years ago when we moved into our house.  It is a marker or reminder of the passage of time to me and I look at it almost every time I walk across the patio.  2006, 2007, and a lot of 2008 are almost a blur in history now but this image has become almost a time capsule in my mind of when we finally moved into our house here in Auburn.

Welcome home to all those who were traveling over the last few days, hope your New Year will be great.

A Texas Roadhouse Dinner and a Movie :: Friday Feet

Texas Roadhouse

Ebby and Scott

This week was one of the more crazy weeks in the past few months, but today Deb and I went over to Georgia and had dinner and that is my friday feet this week.  The movie in case anyone was interested is With Honors (because my friend hasn’t let me borrow Dead Poets Society yet).  One thing I have been trying to get to this week was to shoot a new profile photo (you can see the finished pic here) for various avatars and networking sites.  The second shot here was when I got interrupted and Ebby joined me for the photo shoot.  She certainly did not help at all, but makes for a cute photo I guess.  Time to enjoy a few hours of Friday night and some work outside tomorrow.  Being that it is two days from official winter, it will be over 70* tomorrow, time to cut some fire wood.

How is Your Simple Christmas Going :: Friday Feet

Our church has been going through a series called Simple Christmas and it was going well until this week.  This week has been so incredibly crazy for me I haven’t even had time to do a blog post.  Part of it is the photo in my Friday Feet post today.  You can see a better description of this new entry into our house here.

I have a huge list of blog entries and all kinds of new posts to do here, hopefully I can get to them over the weekend.  Have a nice weekend everyone.
