Auburn Tigers Football vs Southern Miss Game Photos

Auburn vs Southern Miss Football 2008

We are already up to week 2 of Auburn football and this week Southern Miss came into town to play, and ended with a 27-13 win.  It was one of those day games that starts at 11:30am, and mostly played in the most brutal heat that an Alabama summer can produce.  This is what we got today, with a twist, buckets of rain fell in the 4th quarter to add to the misery fun of this football Saturday.

The heat (as expected) was so incredible that Deborah and I just stood in the concession area under the overhang for the entire game.  Surprisingly, we and a number of other people with the same idea, were pleasantly comfortable (besides our legs standing on concrete for 4 hours), and weren’t about to give up our prime shade real estate.

From our vantage point by the walking ramps, we counted at least 20 people brought to the medial services stations on stretchers due to (what we assumed to be) heat exhaustion including one person that had passed out totally at the entry gates to the stadium.  It must have been 20-30 degrees cooler in the shade where we were.  In the end, Auburn beat Southern Miss 27-13 and we survived the heat.  Next week Auburn is away at Mississippi State then back at home for two very hard SEC conference games.

I chose these four images from game day that were my favorite.  It was pretty incredible to see the band members wearing these wool uniforms in this heat.  Standing next to them in this photo (and several others in the gallery) they must have each lost 10 pounds just at this game alone.  The first image is an Auburn icon, the VW camper bus, then the players taking the field and the Auburn cheeleaders.  Looking forward to the next home game, which will be at night, yeah.

Auburn Tigers Football vs Louisiana Monroe Game Photos

Auburn Football vs Louisiana Monroe

Football has started all over the country and this past Saturday was Auburn’s first home game of 2008 vs University of Louisiana Monroe, and it was a 34-0 win.  It was football in the south.  Game day tailgating and all the hoopla that goes along with everything football in Auburn.  There was only one offensive touchdown in the entire game (see photo gallery) and I happen to get a photo of the catch in the end zone.

Auburn football is of course more than just the game itself.  There is a lot of craziness that goes on in the days leading up to the game, and just before the game itself.  Below you will see a few of the images of game day on a typical home game in Auburn.  Thank goodness this was a night game so we all didn’t fry (that comes next week).  Being a night game, it game me a chance to take some images of the stadium at night with the lights.  I think night photography always has a little extra something.  With available light photography, you can always get something great with the lights.

In order these are a wide angle shot of Jordan Hare Stadium from the south west corner upper deck, next is the normal ticket exchange that goes one, then the traditional Auburn raptor, a Golden Eagle, and the Auburn drum section of the band.  There were several other images of Tiger Walk that are included.  Next week should be HOT as the game starts at 11:30am.  Don’t know if I will even want to bring my camera, but if I do I will post some images of the game here next week.

Auburn Tigers NCAA Football Opening Day 2008

Auburn Football Practice 2008

Well the time has come for the craziness to begin here in Auburn.  Today is the start of the Auburn Football schedule (and college football all across the country for that matter), and all things crazy that go along with Auburn Football.

Those unfamiliar with the fall traditions of Auburn football won’t really understand the transformation this town goes through starting today, but it is quite severe, becoming the 4th or 5th largest city in Alabama on gameday weekend, this small, quiet little city becomes a wall to wall metropolis of tailgaters and football fans.  Something I know the city of Auburn wouldn’t trade for anything.

We will add two, to the 87,451 people watching the game live at Jordan-Hare Stadium today.  Hopefully without getting sunburned to bad, and perhaps coming away with a few good images of the game.  Look for me today if you are coming to the game or tailgating on campus, I’ll be the one in the orange Auburn hat.  War Eagle.

Auburn Tigers Football Practice Report Moves into Full Swing

Auburn University football practice is in full swing now and although the second practice on Thursday was rained out, Friday’s practice looked good from the sidelines, and brought many onlookers and media.

As I understand it from the OA News and from the Auburn Tigers CSTV the scrimmage on Saturday went well with about 100 plays being executed. The play was closed to the public and media outside of Auburn relations. These four shots above were taken from the end zone of the secondary practice fields on Friday [full gallery here].  Auburn’s next two-a-day is on Monday with the later practice at 5:45pm, it has been a nice overcast day for football, nice for this time of year.

Auburn Football Practice Starts in the Rain This Year

Auburn Football Practice 2008

Today I went to check out another Auburn football practice, the first two-a-day this year with three more to go. For those who don’t live in the SEC Conference or know anything about football in the state of Alabama, this pretty much starts the craziest time of the year, at least in Auburn.

Football is king in Alabama, and when you happen to live in the city of Auburn, even football practice gets big attention. The parking lot was full at the practice field in Auburn and I managed to walk up, take a few shots, and then the sky just opened up. It hasn’t rained consistently here in almost two years, and today, it poured. I couldn’t even get in the car fast enough to get the 200 football players sprinting for the locker room.

And Then There Was Rain

By the time I got in the car and through the traffic jam that ensued, there were only a few poor souls left chasing down the yard markers and flying debri, but I was there as well.

I will try again on Friday. I did manage to get these shots and a few others (see practice gallery) since the rain happened to be blowing away from the window of my car. I love the guy in the truck, content with the fact that he is soaked, no doubt glad to just be sitting.

There is no two-a-day on Friday as they are going to do a full scrimmage on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium (closed to all public and press). I think I read a report that said they wanted to take about 100 snaps on Saturday, but Friday they should be in full pads at 9:30am, hopefully with no rain.

Auburn Tigers Football Season at a Glance // 2006

UPDATE February 17, 2011: See Poisoning of Toomer’s Live Oaks Article Here along with current photos of the work being done.

Football season is in full swing and living in Auburn has given us the opportunity to experience it this year like never before. We have been to several games already this year with a few more “big” games to go. Auburn’s only loss so far was this weekend to Arkansas and although the weather was perfect for a football game, high 70′s and sunny, the game was quite sad. Anyway, here are some photos of the season thus far and a little explanation of some of the traditions of Auburn University Football.

Parking for the football games is always an adventure here. Generally, you get as close as you can and then hike the 1/4 to 3/4 mile trek across campus to the stadium. The walk is not difficult and when the weather is pleasant the tailgating atmosphere closer to the stadium becomes more festive and anticipatory. Here are a few sites to see on the way to the stadium.

Prior to entering the stadium the Auburn players walk through the fans down a long street that leads them directly into the tunnel. This tradition is called Tiger Walk and is attended by thousands of fans each game day who come to see the players (and coaches) and cheer them on.

This year Scott and I were treated to a tour of the field prior to one of the games. The field is crowned to allow for run off of water and you can really see this from ground level. Something else you can see from ground level is the actual size of the players. I knew they were big guys, but WOW!

Our seats for the games this year have been near mid field, but way high in the upper deck. I really like these seats because you get a wonderful view of the entire field as well as the campus. One advantage we had by having these seats was the ability to see the eagle, Spirit, take off in flight to circle the stadium before landing mid field. The trainers released her from right behind where we were sitting and it was so cool to see (and almost touch) her as she took off.

Taking Off

Pre-game festivities continue with the band taking the field and spelling out various forms of Auburn, AU, etc. They eventually end up forming the shape of an eagle and when the National Anthem is sung the flag is outstretched in the center. Following this there is sometimes a fly over by some type of military plane or helicopter squadron.

Fly Over

Post game festivities consist of making the trek back through campus to the previously chosen parking location for the day. If the outcome of the game was a win for Auburn then this trek is rerouted by way of Toomer’s Drug Store (see above). There is a long standing tradition in Auburn called Rolling Toomer’s Corner . This tradition calls for the trees located across the street, diagonally from the drug store to be rolled, yes, in toilet paper in the event of a win.

Auburn vs Alabama 28-18 Tigers Win 2005 Iron Bowl

This weekend was a blast. We flew from Denver to Atlanta to visit the farm and take in a fantastic Auburn/Alabama football game. Once on the plane, I spent several glorious hours knitting and reading. Getting to Denver, however, was a bit of a challenge because of the snow through the passes, but it was also very beautiful.

Game day began with the traditional Tiger Walk in which the players walk through the sea of orange and blue clad fans on their way to the stadium. Can you see them?

Once the crowd dispersed we made our way into the stadium where Scott and the boys were able to go down and catch practice field goal kicks as they came through the goal post upright. This is one of Scott’s favorite things to do at the games.

Here is a partial group of the brave souls that enjoyed/endured the game. Every seat was occupied throughout the entire game.

The game was fantastic, especially if you are an AUBURN fan. We are already looking forward to next year!
