Busy Week Ends with Smokey Bones BBQ :: Friday Feet

Dinner at Smokey Bones

This was one of the busier weeks I can remember in a while.  Trying to transition everything from different positions and personnel in conjunction with a fast and furious start to the new year made for a crazy week (see Brian’s post It’s only Wednesday // How to drain yourself in three days for a good explanation).  Deb and I drove out to Columbus GA for something a little different than the Auburn flavor and had dinner at Smokey Bones, a BBQ place we like out that way.  This week it is my friday feet post (although this one is less feet and more Deb).

On Saturday we will be going to the Auburn vs Alabama basketball game.  After our last attempt against the Florida Gators it doesn’t look like this game is going to be much better, but who knows.  I am going to try to take my camera and get a few slamin’ shots.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Merry Christmas to My Blogroll with Some Linklove

Christmas Day

Christmas Day

This is usually one of the busiest days for getting from place to place with family functions, but for us, it is normally a nice quiet day here at the house. Today was similar. I was able to take a nice bike ride and enjoy some quiet time here at our house. I do this every so often but for Christmas today I wanted to highlight some of the blogs I read that are based somewhat on or about our faith in Jesus. So are you on the list? If not, please let me know, I love to add new blogs to my feed reader and it might be I just haven’t come across your blog yet.

Some here is some Christmas link love for some of the blogs I read.

Auburn United Methodist Church Gives Out 500 Thanksgiving Dinners

If there is one place where the Church should be involved and actively participating is helping those who need help.  I had a chance to visit the operation area of the Auburn United Methodist Church food bank on Thursday and they were preparing to give away 500 turkey dinners, 800 bags of fresh corn, milk, eggs, potatoes, and everything else you see in the boxes in the photos below.

I snapped this one shot with my phone on my way out, it was really neat to see this many meals lined up, but also a reminder of how many people were going to be here on Friday to pick up these boxes.  If you ever want to help out AUMC does this every Friday, I am sure they would love to have help boxing things up even when it is not Thanksgiving.

Auburn Basketball Opening Day 2008

Today was Auburn’s opening day game in men’s basketball.  Final score was 75-60 and a win against Missouri State.  The Auburn basketball team looked good and Deb and I had a nice evening out.  Our Friday Feet photo this week is from Mike & Ed’s Barbecue in Auburn.  If you are ever in the Auburn area give them a try, great BBQ (pork or chicken), one of many in the Auburn/Opelika area.

Hand Feeding a Ruby Throat Hummingbird :: Photos

Photos of a Ruby Throat Hummingbird in Flight

Photos of a Ruby Throat Hummingbird in Flight

Did I mention we have some crazy, very aggressive eating Ruby Throat Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) here at the house? These little guys are not in the least bit shy, and will act more like a hungry dog if you let their food run dry.  These images were taken as Deborah was trying to put their food back on the window.  A family of about 10 Ruby Throat Hummingbirds live in our yard, I think there are probably 10 more or so that live in the close surrounding area, and when you go out to change their food, they dive bomb you.

This female Ruby Throat Hummingbird finally sat down for a meal, and stayed a while.  Usually she is fighting with the males for a seat, and this time, she decided to be bold and take a seat to eat with Deborah.  The males didn’t seems to interested in chasing her off, but not happy she was the only one eating. She sat, alone, on this feeder while Deborah held it in her hand for about five minutes without getting up (all while flock of other hummingbirds buzzed around her head trying to figure out how to also take a seat at the table).  I have found over time, birds will get to know you, and trust you.  I have also had small wild birds eat out of my hand like the common gray finch, but this was the first time with a hummingbird.

I did upload a few more images of this shoot in the nature > small small creatures gallery.  One in particular is a wider angle shot that shows my wife and her holding the feeder, not just her hand.  We have had hummingbirds at this house since we moved in and each year they come back to the same window letting us know they have arrived.  They seem to have a great memory (even from year to year) and will return to the same location, feeder or no feeder.

Do you have any crazy hummingbirds at your house?  The season is almost over for them here in Alabama and soon they will be off to their winter home in Mexico, Central and South America and the West Indies.  If you want to see them next Spring, just put out a feeder and they will find it.

Summer Salsa Festival in Creede Colorado

A few weekends ago we all attended a salsa festival in downtown Creede. During this annual festival the businesses in town who wish to participate create their own unique salsas from secret recipes and for $5 the public can walk main street sampling each of the concoctions. The funds are given to a good cause and you vote for the salsa you like best. I think there were 20 – 30 different salsas in any flavor imaginable, from the hot and spicy to the fruity. When everyone had enough salsa we stopped for an ice cream cone.
