Summer Swing in the Park Concert Sessions in Opelika

Do you know what goes on in your own city? Apparently I don’t. Last night I went to shoot the Summer Swing Fest in Opelika Alabama and, who knew, it is a whole summer series of concert events that goes on each Tuesday night during the summer, wow.

Every Tuesday evening beginning May 13, 2008, the Opelika Parks and Recreation Department hosts a free outdoor concert at 7:00 p.m. at Municipal Park in Opelika Alabama. This 14-week concert series offers a wide variety of musical entertainment including Gospel, Jazz, R & B, Oldies, Country, Big Band Swing, Folk, and Community Band music.

Ok, so I found out because I was scheduled to shoot the Cornerstone Band that night, but what a great event for the city, and there were a lot of people there as well.

This particular event had two bands, the Cornerstone Band and the Sons of Asaph Band from Auburn United Methodist Church. I had a great time and although I did not know this was an event that goes on each summer, I do now. I am still in the process of editing the shoot from last night and I will post an update here with a link to the final image edit when completed.

A Busy Weekend Cleaning and the New iPhone?

Not having done my daily journal post in a while I thought I would sum up the weekend here real quick. It was a very busy weekend starting with a shoot on Saturday and then another most of the day on Sunday.

First Saturday Photo Shoot

Saturday I was shooting a clean up and maintenance session called First Saturday. I wasn’t quite sure going in if I would get anything worth keeping photographically, but it didn’t turn out to bad. Sometimes when you are trying to shoot somewhat ordinary tasks it makes you really look for ways, or new ways, to be creative.

I went ahead and completed the edit of the shoot when I got home, knowing there would be another shoot on Sunday, glad I did too. You can see the complete gallery edit of First Saturday here, if you are so inclined. There were still the normal things like grass to mow and all that so Deb and I tried to squeeze everything in we could that day.

Sunday Photo Shoot and Service

Sunday was a packed day, starting around 5am and ending at close to midnight. It would be the first time to go in and shoot during the service and try to be as invisible as possible while shooting communion. It was a busy day (see Sunday over at Worship Journey for details). Of course, the booth is a busy place to be on a Sunday morning.

I was hoping to get the edit done for that shoot on Sunday as well but just couldn’t get to it, and I was exhausted, so I will just do it today or tomorrow. As soon as I get the completed galleries loaded I will post links to them here as well.

This Week, Photos, and a little WWDC / iPhone

So, this week is just about as busy as last week. We start off on the Internet with the WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference) where Steve Jobs is set to announce the latest version of the iPhone. Supposedly in new colors, and deemed to be the 3G version for its capability of utilizing the AT&T broadband 3G network.

If so, it is about time. The edge network is slow, and anyone familiar with cell phone usage in Europe or Japan would be appalled by the lack of cell phone broadband available. It is interesting to see how things develop. If you are familiar with Twitter, they are now showing a link using Summize: Apple fan? Our pals at Summize are tracking the WWDC shown on their main page. It automatically feeds on any terms on Twitter using Steve Jobs, Apple, iPhone, or WWDC, pretty interesting, but traffic is huge, will probably take down Twitter before long.

I would like to have some time to try to figure out how to really utilize Summize, especially with its advanced search features. Guess I will leave that for another day, but its potential looks great. The search strings are endless if you are interested in a very specific topic. As far as the new iPhone goes, ff course I already have the first generation iPhone so I hope they just add the 3G service for existing customers as well, don’t think I will be running out for iPhone 2.0 any time soon unless they need some free beta testers.

Meet the Cornerstone Buzz Band :: Photos

I had the privilege last night to do another photo shoot with the Cornerstone band. Being able to do a photo shoot while listening to and participating in some great praise and worship music is pretty cool. This is part of a larger collection of images (see full photo shoot set here) that Cornerstone is trying to gather, and step everything up to the next level. I am glad I can be a part of the process. Out of about 1,000 images I shot last night I edited down to about 50, then those 50 were narrowed down to about 30, which are now loaded in the full shoot session on my gallery, and I chose 5 of those for this post here. So, come meet the band.

Music, Work, Worship, Photography and a Little Fun

It has been an extremely busy last several days and my normal daily journal post (as in this one) has been lost the last few days. We have been very busy with the books and all other aspects of work, but I also took on a few extra projects that took a bit more time than I anticipated (not unusual). Yesterday was Deborah’s birthday, see post Happy Birthday, Deborah, and I hope she had a nice day, but it was one where we didn’t have to leave the house for work, but just tried to get things done here at our home office. That basically means carrying boxes up and down the stairs all day and getting them listed on our store.

Deborah went through more books yesterday than in a typical day, which means I carried more boxes up the stairs and down the stairs than a typical day, BUT, we are starting to be able to see the floor in our dining room. Something we haven’t seen in going on two years now (we received a shipment of about an 18-wheeler load of books some 18 months ago and are still trying to get through all of them).

Photography (With a Little Worship), Finally

It has been a while since I have done some actual photography shooting on location, but last night I had the opportunity to do some shooting at the church of the band while they practiced. Below is just one small “head shot” of the worship leader. All in all I took about 500 shots over the hour and a half so it will take some time to go through (hope Brian doesn’t mind me putting up his mug shot for everyone to see).

I am trying to get some graphical images of the worship band up on the worship leaders blog site (now over at http://th.eophil.us or http://www.worship-journey.com for the long url). It is an ongoing project and hopefully will have a great impact on those who read and follow Brian’s story.

Everything Else

I was able to get to my guitar lesson this week, although I have been so busy I haven’t had time to practice yet. I now know exactly how much I don’t know, just about everything. I did get some new music arrivals this week as well, they included another interesting mix:

Glad to finally get back to my journal blog here. I am not to happy with my newish theme so I might go back to the other one and use the head graphic I did the other day, who knows.

How Are You Encountering God's People, Are You Fluid?

It is almost mid-week, have you picked up or thought about your fluid card yet? Brian’s Worship Journey blog this morning, a loss for words reminded me that this is not something we should do, check off the list, job well done, and move on.

This is something we need to keep with us in our hearts each day as we encounter God’s people. So, I posted my mug to remind myself to get on the ball and be a person of action. These do sound like simple things on Sunday morning but we all get busy and have a million things going on all throughout the week, hopefully I can remember to take time out as the opportunity arises.

A Fluid Experience

This is the current series our church is doing on the importance of being mission people. After the service on Sunday, they had tables to pick up various types of cards as examples of how we can be people of action. These are simple things. Baking cookies for the firehouse, providing food for people in need and so on. The cards we picked up was our way of saying, we will commit to being a person of action this week.

Those over at THE FLUID EXPERIENCE are waiting to hear your stories from this week, I am looking forward to them as well. We took our card with us today into town and I can’t wait for it to be put into use.

Visiting a New Church Called Cornerstone Church in Auburn

Some days feel like a new beginning on a diverted pathway where the bend in the road has been met and a new direction is started. Not a path that will eventually meet back at the original road, but a new direction that has not yet been carved. Sometimes visiting a new church can give you a new perspective and a renewed spirit. This weekend we visited Cornerstone and enjoyed worshiping with other Believers.

The Lord certainly was alive in this place and after driving by their new building for more than a year we decided to visit, glad we did, thanks for a great time of worship.
