Busy Week Ends with Smokey Bones BBQ :: Friday Feet

Dinner at Smokey Bones

This was one of the busier weeks I can remember in a while.  Trying to transition everything from different positions and personnel in conjunction with a fast and furious start to the new year made for a crazy week (see Brian’s post It’s only Wednesday // How to drain yourself in three days for a good explanation).  Deb and I drove out to Columbus GA for something a little different than the Auburn flavor and had dinner at Smokey Bones, a BBQ place we like out that way.  This week it is my friday feet post (although this one is less feet and more Deb).

On Saturday we will be going to the Auburn vs Alabama basketball game.  After our last attempt against the Florida Gators it doesn’t look like this game is going to be much better, but who knows.  I am going to try to take my camera and get a few slamin’ shots.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Gulf Shores Bike Trail to Beautiful Sunset Beach

Bike ride

I would like to say that every day is filled with a bike ride and a walk on the beach, but at least, today, it was.  We use to spend quite a bit of time in Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Perdido Key, but haven’t made it down here in the last 6 months.  This is our absolutely favorite time of year to be down here.  The beaches and parks are usually empty, the temperature is still pretty nice.

After getting some work done at home we drove down to a bike trail in Orange Beach that is easy to find but not on many maps or searches.  The Hugh S Branyon Backcountry Trail, which starts and runs through Gulf State Park, is a paved trail that have several different 1-2 mile sections that runs through the sand dunes and some beautiful nature areas.  We have driven by several times in the past but never stopped to ride the tail.

Of course no day would be complete down here without a walk on the beach.  We made it over to the sand just in time to see the sun set.  I walked a few miles down the beach and then we had dinner at a restraunt there on the beach, The Hangout.

I am always amazed at the beauty of the beach and the ocean.  I have seen it so many times, in many different states and countries and it still has some magical, almost mystic quality.  A place that for one reason or another allows you to remove the routine of life and the busy world around you and leaves you with sand and water… but a lot of sand, and an unreal amount of water.

I think people are attracted to the beach because it represents life.  Water that is living, breathing, and a constantly changing yet every time you go to the same beach, it looks relatively the same.  Taking a walk a few miles down a nice white sand beach (especially in January) is a spiritual thing, and I will take a walk any chance I get.  Here are some photos from the day.

Alabama vs Utah Football on Tap Today :: Friday Feet

Bike Ride

This has been a busy week and a busy Friday.  We started off the day with some tree trimming work on the farm.  Always good exercise and never a lack of work to be done.  The temperature has been going crazy lately.  Yesterday it was freezing and today it was about 60* so I managed to get in about a 10 mile bike ride before the bowl games started.

The bowl game of the day of course is Alabama vs Utah in the 2009 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.  It has been a very long time since Auburn has not made it to a bowl game, so this year I am just going to have to go for Alabama.  Hopefully next year we will be back in a bowl game somewhere warm.

Friday Feet today was a triple shot of trees, bike, and football (although the football game was Kentucky vs Easy Carolina, which was also a very good game).  As I write this the Alabama game is now and Utah has taken a touchdown lead, it should be a great game.  This year it seems like it has been a very long holiday and I am looking forward to getting back to a normal work week and to next weekend when Deb and I will take a short break down in Orange Beach.  Have a great weekend everyone.

A Look at the Highs and Lows of My Blog for 2008

As is customary during this time of year, we all have a tendency to look back at what 2008 had in store for us and look ahead to 2009.  A lot happened in 2008 and I thought I would do what many bloggers are doing of course and post of few of my favorite blogs posts, top posts, searches, and tweets for 2008.  What was the highlight of your year?  I think we tend to remember the mosts recent and forget about what happened in January or February of this year but that’s what is great about a blog, all you have to do is go back and look at your archives.

What Was the Highlight of 2008?

For me personally, my highlight was probably joining the staff of Cornerstone Church as their IT person in December.  This was something I had been looking at, praying about, and preparing for, for many years, long before I ever moved to Auburn.  What made it even better to me was how outstanding the existing leadership staff (Rusty, Josh, Brian, and Jack) was when I came on board, and I can’t wait to move ahead in 2009 with the goals set forth by the church and the Church body as a whole.

I have only had time to just get my feet wet through the month of December but looking ahead there are great things in store for this small, but growing, church body, and hopefully I can contribute to its continued success in leading people to know and serve Jesus.

What Was the Lowlight of 2008?

Can you have a highlight or a best without a worst? I know many who believe this to be true, that you don’t have to have the existence of evil to good but that is for another post.  Probably the low point of 2008 for me and my immediate house was when we lost my mother-in-law Georgia to cancer.  It was not something I will ever forget, and is something I remembered in one form or another every day from April to this day.  I learned a lot, prayed a lot, and miss her as well.

Best of the Blog in 2008

These are some of the best according to me stats, but I am also picking the blog posts that I liked the best, which is not something stats will tell you.  It is interesting that stats will only tell you exact numbers, not feelings, so enter a feeling into the equation and it will change everything.

My Favorite Posts of 2008

Most Active

And as a bonus, the top searches.  This one is always weird to me.  If you pay attention to your searches (much deeper than this) you will see that people find your blog in some of the strangest ways, but yet the information is still relevant.

Aubie Puts the Moves on My Wife :: Photos

Last night Deb and I went to the Auburn vs Alabama State men’s basketball game, which always turns out to be a great game.  Deb took her knitting to see if she could get Aubie to pose with her and her knitting and Aubie was more than happy to do that and then some.  It was great fun and Auburn did pull out a win in the last few minutes of the game.  At the last game Aubie was wearing this same Aubie Santa costume and Deborah wanted to get him holding her knitting so she could post it on her blog.  Suddenly she found herself being acousted by Aubie but I was there to get the photo evidence and proof.

Aubie is always a lot of fun and one of the very best mascots in NCAA college anywhere.

Gene Chizik of Auburn is Volcanic on Google Trends

So this is basically old news now, Gene Chizik is now the new Auburn Tigers head coach we have all been waiting on now for about 2 weeks.  I almost felt obligated to post something about the new head coach living here in Auburn, after all, how often do we welcome a new head coach for the football program (that was a rhetorical question only).  It didn’t even take a rumor from ESPN to start the endless grumblings and he even had people how up at the airport for his arrival, and not in the same way Nick Saban was greeted by Alabama fans (though he really does seem popular with the players and coaches).   I was totally willing to give the guy a chance and let him actually land in Auburn before nailing him to a cross.  He was the defensive coordinator for Auburn (and a popular one), was part of the undefeated team, won a national championship at Texas, then… Iowa.

How hot was and is this topic.  Well according to Google, “volcanic“, and this was on a night that was competing with the Heisman Trophy of all things.  Several times within the 12 hours before and after he hit the #1 search term on google (and I am not sure how much higher you can go on google as far as hot topics than volcano), and after a full 24 hours of the news he is still sitting at #7.  To bad google hot topic trends doesn’t count in the BCS rankings.  Of course, that really tells me that a whole bunch of people had never heard of Chizik and had no idea who Auburn had just named to be the next head coach.

Gene Chizik on Google Trends

I really hope he doesn’t read a lot of blogs and online media.  I started looking around at the usual suspects and the overall negative tone was deafening.  Really my only question is if Chizik is the person to lead Auburn football back to a National Championship (it has been over 50 years of course).  Auburn football should be up in the top-tier of NCAA football teams right up there with Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Penn State, and of course Alabama.   So why did we not go get the biggest name that money could buy?

Maybe money really doesn’t buy happiness, or 12 wins and a National Championship (just ask Alabama, they came real close).  Auburn had to pay about $750,000 to buy Chizik out of Iowa State, and apparently Iowa State is basically thanking Auburn for taking him off their hands.  Now really, I know he didn’t win a game in the big 12 but what kind of recruits can you get in Iowa State when you have to compete with Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and the big Nebraska?  Still, he has landed in Auburn and he will be the next head coach.  If Auburn wins football games next year everyone will sing Jay Jacobs praises, but the Auburn fan base expects wins, and not just five.

I am willing to trust the higher-ups at Auburn and give Chizik the chance Auburn is willing to take.  He apparently visited our church when he was living here as the defensive coordinator, so maybe he will come join us for worship again.  I know he will be welcomed the same as anyone else on Sunday mornings.  We can all have an opinion but no one at Auburn wants to win football games more than the kids, the coaches, and the University itself.  I have to think that somehow, they think this will be the way to do it come the fall of 2009.  Hopefully he and his family can withstand the pressure until that first kickoff game in 2009, it is a long way off.

And the Winner of the Dell Desktop Giveaway is…

ARM

Wow this month went by fast.  Yes, today is the day we are giving away the Dell Desktop that we originally posted on November 1st (see I am Giving Away a Free Dell Dimension Computer and 17″ Flat Panel in 29 Days) and we waited all the way until 12:01am on November 29th to announce the winner. All in all we had about 100 responses on the blog directly, with approximately 5-10 of those being qualified entries. I really appreciate all the people who have contacted me directly and I wish I had enough spare computers laying around to give one to everyone, but I only have one.

The Winner is Lisa Pierce with Alabama Rural Ministries (ARM)

Alabama Rural Ministries has a great program and their post (seen here Not Thinking of Myself Today!) is the winning entry.  The mission work for ARM is shown on their website as:

Our Mission

We believe Christ’s love must be expressed in action to people in need. ARM is a hands on ministry, responding to people through Christian love with an emphasis in housing repair and children’s ministry.

Alabama Rural Ministry coordinates home repair efforts and children’s day camps in rural parts of Alabama. We are interdenominational but are connected to the United Methodist Church. All denominations are welcome to come and serve!

For the service that you give is not only supplying the needs of everyone but is an expression of many thanks to God. 2 Corinthians 9:11-12

ARM has focused its efforts in sharing God’s love in two primary areas:

Home Repair – The ARM staff assists teams coming to do home repair by purchasing materials, introducing teams to their families, and serving as technical assistants. Typical ARM projects include repairing and/or replacing roofs, ceilings, floors and walls. We also build steps and wheelchair ramps for elderly or disabled individuals. We match our projects with the skills of our volunteers, maximizing the services we are able to provide. Our service extends to plumbing and electrical work when our volunteers are able to do such work. If you are involved in a group with any of these skills, please consider a trip to ARM to help the elderly and disabled families of rural Alabama.

Day Camps – Teams working with the day camp work with the ARM day camp staff to plan Bible studies, songs, recreation activities and much more! Day camps are run similarly to Vacation Bible Schools and other day camp programs. Our volunteers are able to enhance the children’s experiences through interaction, whether it be fellowship, playing games, going on field trips, or presenting Bible stories and devotions. The children of the Sonshine Day Camp are truly remarkable in their ability to show love to so many volunteers that come in and out of their lives each summer. We invite anyone with a love for children to join us for this amazing experience this summer.

Volunteer teams come from all over the country to do either home repair and/or work with day camps for area children. At select sites, groups may choose to do both types of ministries at the same time!

If anyone has a desire to get involved with them I am sure they would love to receive as much help as they can get, and it is a very worth ministry.

Another Beautiful and Colorful Fall Day in Alabama

Fall Tree Swing in Alabama

What a difference just a few days makes in the fall. This is what our tree (and swing) looked like this afternoon.  Compare that to this Fall Has Finally Arrived in Alabama, and My Swing Loves It, taken just a few days ago.

It was a totally different time of day of course, but the colors have changed dramatically, and many of the leaves have started to fall off the trees.  I don’t remember this tree turning colors like this last year but as the years click off each fall probably looks more colorful to me.  How were your fall colors this year?

Today Auburn finally ended up with a win after 4 straight losses starting with Vanderbilt back on October 4th and ending with Mississippi last week, a 37-20 win is a still a win. The weather was great and the game moved along nicely since it was not on TV this time. No “red hat” referee was even on the field which was nice and the pre-game and homecoming festivities were enjoyable as well.

This week was the Ag Roundup in Ag Heritage Park where Auburn showcased the Auburn University Mobile Gasification Unit which converts wood chips and woody biomass into electricity (see more at the NRMDI website or their blog) and they also offered up some great southern food at the Taste of Alabama.

Below are some of the photos I took throughout the day. You can see more of the photos from today at the Auburn vs Tennessee Martin gallery. (Sorry for those who are not on DSL here). Most of the day was spent in the sun (the North endzone will do that) but it was not so hot you couldn’t stand it like previous day games. I was able to get some pretty good shots of the band this week. The Auburn band is usually pretty accessible and this week was no different. So for those band mom’s out there, just click on the gallery above to see more like the ones below.

The next two weeks will probably prove to be very difficult for Auburn. All we have left in the season is Georgia, who always seems to be able to win in Auburn no matter what kind of season we are having, and of course the Auburn vs Alabama game on November 29th in Tuscaloosa. I am sure all those Bama fans are licking their chops at this point. For them, I would hate to get over confident and loose out on a national championship birth by loosing to Auburn but stranger things can happen.

Fall Colors Arrive on My Tree Swing in Alabama

Sweetgum Tree in the Alabama Fall

Sweetgum Tree in the Alabama Fall

The temperature yesterday did get close to the forcasted 78*F but the leaves on the trees are starting to turn colors.  Our place is covered in a small forest of pine trees and just a few hard wood trees which are mostely these Sweetgum Tree which most people around this part of the country consider to be a weed-like nuscence.  Mine however holds our tree swing which provides a great place to relax and sit in the peacefulness of the day.
